I just finished this book and was torn being giving it three or four stars, so gave it 3.5... Frankly, the book is not very well written, but it does present interesting descriptions of a part of the war (late June 1941) from the Soviet perspective that we don't see many good books on. In brief, the book does an excellent job of describing the utter chaos on the Soviet side in the first days of the war, and the serious difficulties that the Soviet commanders faced in simply getting their unprepared units ready to encounter the Germans, especially given the constantly changing and contradictory orders. That said, the book is pretty repetitive, a bit tedious, and generally not very well written. In general, I would recommend it for those really interested in the early days of the Eastern Front, but probably not for the general reader.
