This is an excellent, short book detailing the experiences of a German soldier in a panzer unit in the Danzig area during the closing months of World War II. The author does an excellent job of describing the difficult and chaotic conditions faced by the German army as the Soviets advanced on Danzig, the problems caused by the masses of refugees fleeing the Red Army, and why the Germans continued to fight at all.
The author includes a very interesting account of his lucky escape to British-occupied Germany by sea in the last days of the war, and his reception by the locals and the British. The book also includes accounts by other German soldiers unlucky enough to fall into Soviet hands as the war ended, including some betrayed by the Swedes.
