This is an excellent account of a little-covered battle in the summer of 1942, on the periphery of the Stalingrad battle. General Liziukov, disgraced and demoted after his failure as the commander of the 5th Tank Army, launched his 2nd Tank Corps at the Germans in an attempt to redeem his career and reputation. The author does an excellent job of describing how--an why--his attack, and those the other tank corps in Operational Group Chibisov, failed miserably. Nonetheless, while a German victory, the Germans suffered heavy casualties.

The author does a great job researching archival material and memoirs to describe not only the conduct of the operation, but the recollections of the various participants about the various failings of the Red Army during this operation.

The physical book is very nice as well; the maps are pretty good but all bunched in the middle of the book rather than closer to the relevant reference in the book. The book's font is very small.
